A little girl is found all alone, crouched in the back of a dog house in an area so rural it has no name and is simply assigned a number. A sweeping tale, told on a small scale, tracing the lives of the inhabitants of tiny backwoods Moon Hill, Maine. An old police chief, his best friend the Penobscot Indian park ranger, his widowed daughter (and best cop), and the odd old woman who lives by the graveyard work together to solve--and contain--a dark mystery that began with the strange little girl.
