Towards the Death of the Dark
by Hannah Elizabeth Latham

In 1974, the Bantu Education Department imposed Afrikaans as an equal medium of instruction, alongside English, upon learners in secondary schools. In response, on June 16 1976, around 10,000 school children peacefully demonstrated against the government’s directive. In 2015, students across democratic South Africa were met with teargas and stun grenades for daring to ask for the ideals in the Freedom Charter to be realised.
