Frans Meyer was raised and schooled in Pretoria. Later, he attended Infantry School, the University of Pretoria, Grootfontein Agricultural College, and 43 Air School. After spending a number of years farming in the Karoo, he changed careers and became a flight instructor, then a contract pilot, and later an operations director in North Africa.
