In 14th Century England the widowed ale-wife Eleanor is content to live a life of solitude. That is until she makes a fateful decision to save an injured stranger, Matilda, who turns out to be a woman in disguise, on the run from a notorious gang of highwaymen. When false accusations are levelled against Eleanor, the pair flee north where Matilda must face her buried past, and the two are forced to face the burgeoning feelings for each other that threaten their very lives.
