This fabulist novel depicts the evolution of a 12-year-old girl after her country suffers a sudden takeover by an army of militarised bears who terrorise parents, teachers and community leaders to such an extent that she is doubly repressed: by the invaders’ might and the invaded’s fears. Gathering her courage, she shows through increasingly risky acts how bullies are defeatable. The story also jumps back in time to show a similar challenge faced by an older relative decades before.
