Born and raised in Ethiopia during the era of the communist regime, Pawlos left his homeland at a young age and spent fourteen years in Nigeria, where he witnessed the struggles of refugees firsthand. When he thought the situation had improved, he returned to Ethiopia, started a family, and taught at Addis Ababa University for fifteen years. He immigrated once more, this time to Canada, where he had the chance to experience life as a refugee in a significantly different environment.
