A newspaper reporter and sports writer whose wanderings have brought me to Genoa, Italy, via Berlin, London and numerous other stops, I went back to my Black Country roots when writing my magical realist-cum-gritty memoir Heathens. I was jogging on a crumbling municipal track in Reggio Calabria when I started musing about an idea which eventually became the chapter Fubtubfub. From there, the book poured out and got written during Italy’s Covid lockdown. It’s gathered virtual dust ever since.
