Born in 1951, I gained a degree in economics and politics at Glasgow University. After the birth of my daughter, I moved to Edinburgh, where I worked in a locked psychiatric ward. I qualified as a nurse and worked mainly in Dundee, where I eventually ran a dedicated HIV/AIDS ward, and also on Islay. I have read fiction and non-fiction avidly since childhood and although I loved my profession, I always intended to be a writer.
