Writing saved my life. Stories showed me a better way to live and to understand the world after a really rough start. We were council-house poor, but there was no such thing where I came from. I lived in fifteen places by the time I was five years old. You learn a lot about the world growing up, looking for pop bottles to cash in for food money. The character in my novel, twelve-year-old Jim Parker, has it rough, too. His struggle was my struggle. This is the most personal novel I have written.
