Kaiva doesn’t know she has another mother, that a parallel realm exists, or that kindness can be fatal. When her singing fractures the boundary between surveilled Soviet-occupied Latvia and the magical Saarma Sirmi, Soviet concrete and soot begin to poison Saarma Sirmi while its beauty bleeds back into Kaiva's world. Captured by the KGB and learning her mother lives as a political prisoner, she must choose: doom another world to tyranny or save her mother.
