I have written a few short stories, one of which won in a UK competition, but I started writing by jumping straight in with a novel. I hadn't intended to write anything - I just had a series of ideas that developed into a vision of the future that picks up on current trends and a possible realisation of their potential. It was an inconvenience to have to get all these ideas and themes into a book, but I did it. Having no prior experience of writing though, I haven't shared the book yet.
