Like my protagonist, I worked as a prison law librarian and hold a Ph.D. from Stanford, where I studied with Albert J. Guerard, mentor to John Updike and Alice Hoffman, who inspired me to “forget about objective correlatives and the old ‘fifties rules. And forget about Kafka. Just spit your guts onto the page.” The result was True Confessions of a Horny Wimp, from which I gave readings on various campuses.
