A magazine accepted a short of story of mine for publication when I was 22 years old; this was more important to me than going to university at the time although I had no inkling of the long, arduous journey that lay ahead - working in jobs that were my second choice and sitting up late at night writing stories only to receive rejection after rejection - then putting a brave face on things and going into work to try to do my best.
