The novel is an ideal medium for ‘big subjects’ because it’s the only narrative form that transports the reader directly inside characters’ heads. I am interested in the recent past and its impact on the present. What excites me is cause and effect and unconventionality in all its forms. I have only three rules of writing. Whatever my subject-matter, the end-product must be honest, credible and authentic. My favourite description of fiction is 'made-up truth'.
