Words & Wounds
by Oliver Whitefield

Doppo Harada is a second-rank priest at a failing shrine in a picturesque coastal village near Tokyo at the very end of the 19th century. When a dead body turns up in the local woods, he is determined to find out who has died and why. Against a backdrop of Japan's rapid modernization and social change, Harada's investigation takes him to both the affluent neighbourhoods of Tokyo and the bustling docks of Yokohama, where he gradually uncovers a conspiracy of murder, corruption and revenge.
