Just as Americans begin to rebuild their lives after WWII, Maddie Brown is trying to do the same. Grieving the loss of her older brother, Joe, who was killed in battle, Maddie is stunned when a scarred stranger proposes to her at a memorial service. Certain it must be a mistake and unwilling to risk more heartbreak, she walks away in disbelief. But when the stranger reappears, he brings with him the one thing Maddie thought forever lost: the truth behind her brother’s untimely death.
