A country ruled by a tyrannical Governor. A girl living on a scrap of land beside a bridge. She wants to learn to read, but there is no school. But when the bridge is damaged it is Alma who suggests a toll for its repair. Her father becomes a toll-keeper, and better off than he has ever been. Alma gets the education she wants from a mysterious young teacher. Armed with it, a teenager now, she becomes one of the leaders of a rebellion against the Governor, and puts her life at risk.
