Prince Castian Aramanus Siavola barely survives an assassination and surprise attack on his home. With his wife and a few survivors, he flees to safety to rally support as civil war erupts. Meanwhile, a thief, Flavia, is given a simple job by the King of Rats. Look after a little boy. But this boy is a hostage, one whose life or death will alter the outcome of the war. Flavia must choose between her family and this innocent child, but there's a war raging between her and bringing him to safety.
