Sound of the Sea
by J. Patrick Armstrong

The Coelacanth Chronicles is a novel that traces the life of Robin, a white South African boy growing up in the brutality of apartheid society. The novel resists sentimentality and exposes how identity is shaped. The novel charts his growing awareness of his homosexuality within a violently heteronormative culture, and there are moments of rare authenticity. The novel is about survival rather than triumph. It argues that honesty is not cleansing, that memory is both a curse and a refuge.
