A Portrait of a Woman and a Still Life of her Burger
by Candelaria Saenz Valiente

Young Jem can't evade looming catastrophe for long. Part family thriller, part early rite of passage, a South African lowveld farming family struggles with drought, financial loss and the encroachments of apartheid in the 1960s. Everything changes with the sexual assault of a farmworker’s young daughter, leading to the unravelling of the community’s comfortable assumptions and the ripping off of the plaster of colonial respectability. A fatal shooting unmasks the culprit.
