It's been 200 years since Britain built a wall around the island to keep foreigners out: no one knows what lies beyond. Tolan, a little boy growing up in the concrete shadow of the edge of the world, grows up with folktales of beasts and savages in his ears until a forbidden friendship with a high-born boy threatens to reveal a long silenced truth: the monster was already here. As famines threatening social order in a race-feudalist society obsessed with purity, a terrifying decision is made.
