When Wren Haversham is eight years old, she sees a spider fall from its web. As it dangles on its delicate thread, she realises her own luck might run out one day. Fearfully, she imagines losing it all: the love around her, her good fortune, her safety. When her family leaves England for South Africa, Wren is thrust into a world in which bad luck determines a life of danger and good luck comes at a high price.
