Fifteen-year-old Mwapo slips through a hole in a fence at the edge of the Hadzaland. On the other side, something unimaginable is waiting. Thousands of miles away, a boy is selected from a nameless institution and cast off into the same hidden preserve. He is Runner Number 1. Soon, four teenagers from radically different worlds must form a fragile alliance to survive hunters determined to prove one brutal theory: evolution favours the ruthless.
